Gavin Matthews — Founder & Horticulturist
Gavin’s career in horticulture began from humble beginnings as a nursery hand at Rankins Rose Nursery, before progressing into senior and Head Gardener roles with Lucas House and Garden and Gardener and Son. After briefly stepping away from horticulture to explore another passion—food, hospitality and events—the pull of working with plants and gardens ultimately brought him back.
In 2015, Gavin returned to the industry and began formal horticultural studies alongside his practical work. He now holds a Double Diploma in Horticulture and Conservation and has continued his education through advanced studies in Permaculture Design with Matt Powers (M.Ed).
In 2020, Gavin founded Artisan Horticulture, initially operating the business alongside his other horticultural roles. His time as Head Gardener at Gardener and Son in 2023, surrounded by a team equally passionate about their craft, ultimately gave him the push to take Artisan Horticulture from a side business into his full-time focus.
Today, Gavin leads a growing team of horticulturists caring for some of Melbourne’s finest residential gardens. His approach combines traditional horticultural knowledge with regenerative practices, modern techniques and meticulous attention to detail—recognising that every garden is unique and requires care tailored to its plants, design and stage of development.
In 2024, Gavin began sharing his horticultural knowledge more broadly, running practical workshops for Permaculture Victoria and presenting to the Waverley Garden Club. These opportunities reflect his passion for helping others better understand their gardens and sharing his experience in horticulture, plant care and thoughtful garden management.
For Gavin, horticulture is more than a profession—it’s a lifelong passion for understanding plants, cultivating beautiful gardens and continually learning how to care for them better.
